PrusaSlicer Guide: Print, Filament & Printer Settings
Keep Print, Filament, and Printer settings separate, preserve a known-good preset, and use PrusaSlicer features only where they solve a specific print problem.
Know which PrusaSlicer profile owns the setting
PrusaSlicer separates Print Settings, Filament Settings, and Printer Settings. That separation is a troubleshooting advantage: model strategy belongs mostly in the print profile, temperatures and cooling belong with the filament, and machine-specific behavior such as nozzle or retraction assumptions belongs with the printer profile. Diagnose the layer that owns the problem before changing values.
1. Verify the printer and first layer
Start with the correct printer/nozzle profile and physical first-layer setup. Do not use slicer compensation to hide a mechanical Z or bed problem.
◆2. Tune filament behavior
Temperature, cooling, filament condition, and retraction interact. Make material changes in the filament/printer context where they can be reused consistently.
◆3. Choose supports for the geometry
Grid, snug, organic, paint-on supports, blockers, and contact settings solve different geometry problems. Use the lightest support strategy that controls the overhang.
◆4. Match support style to the job
Tree or organic-style structures can reduce contact on some shapes, while conventional supports can be more predictable for broad planar overhangs.
◆5. Migrate profiles carefully
When moving between slicers, recreate printer, filament, and process assumptions deliberately instead of assuming similarly named settings are identical.
◆6. Build strength intentionally
Walls, top/bottom layers, infill, extrusion quality, orientation, and layer bonding all matter. Increasing infill alone is rarely the complete strength fix.
Keep reusable profiles clean
Use the Configuration Wizard and vendor profiles as a stable starting point, then save custom profiles by purpose. If you experiment with a different nozzle, unusual filament, or aggressive speed profile, do not overwrite the baseline that already works. A clean profile hierarchy makes it much easier to compare changes and return to known-good settings.
For surface quality, use tools such as variable layer height only after the base extrusion and geometry are reliable. Advanced controls are valuable when they target a real feature on the model; they are not substitutes for correct first layer, filament temperature, extrusion, or mechanical calibration.
