How Do I Calibrate Z Offset? Use the First Layer as the Gauge

Calibrate Z offset from the behavior of the first layer, not from a universal number. The goal is a repeatable nozzle-to-bed gap that joins neighboring lines without scraping, ridging, or leaving round strands.

Understand what Z offset is adjusting

Z offset fine-tunes the working relationship between the printer's Z reference and the nozzle height used for the first layer. It is not the same thing as bed mesh compensation. A mesh describes height variation across the bed; Z offset establishes the overall nozzle-to-surface relationship.

Before calibration: stabilize the variables

  • Use the build plate you actually intend to print on.
  • Clean the print area so contamination does not imitate a height problem.
  • Seat removable plates correctly.
  • Use the printer's normal bed-mesh/leveling workflow if it relies on one.
  • Bring the machine to the normal calibration/printing condition recommended by its manufacturer.
  • Use a known-good filament and a simple first-layer test.

Print a simple single-layer pattern

A broad pattern with lines in multiple bed regions is more useful than a tiny dot in the center. Watch the first passes. You are looking for line shape, how neighboring lines meet, whether direction changes stay attached, and whether the nozzle drags through previously deposited plastic.

If the nozzle is too high

Typical clues are round strands, weak contact, visible gaps between adjacent lines, corners that detach immediately, or filament that follows the nozzle. Move the calibration toward a slightly smaller working gap according to your printer's interface. Do not assume that “positive” or “negative” always means the same physical direction across every firmware or UI.

If the nozzle is too low

Typical clues are deep ridges, very thin or translucent extrusion, scraping, a rough surface, or the nozzle pushing through the previous line. Move the calibration toward a slightly larger working gap. If the nozzle is touching the plate, stop the test and correct the height before continuing.

Make small changes and rerun the same pattern

Large jumps make it easy to overshoot. Use small adjustments supported by your printer's calibration controls, then rerun the same pattern with flow, temperature, speed, plate, and filament held constant. The best setting is the one that repeats, not the one that looks acceptable once.

Check more than the center of the bed

Save the value only after the result is stable

Use the printer's normal save/apply procedure if required. Then start a new print as appropriate and verify that the same first-layer behavior returns. If the value drifts after every print, use Z Offset Drifts After Every Print rather than recalibrating forever.

Recalibrate after changes that can alter nozzle-to-bed geometry

Nozzle work, hotend service, build-plate changes, probe changes, gantry/bed movement, or moving the printer can change the relationship you calibrated. Recheck Z offset whenever a hardware change makes the previous first-layer result stop repeating.

Calibration success criteria

  • Adjacent lines meet without open gaps.
  • The surface is continuous without sharp nozzle ridges.
  • Direction changes remain attached.
  • The nozzle does not scrape or drag through the layer.
  • The result is reasonably consistent across the printable area after mesh/leveling compensation.
  • The saved value repeats on the next print.
