Dry filament without guessing
Do not treat every stringy or rough print as wet filament. Moisture can cause popping, hissing, bubbles, fuzzy surfaces, extra stringing, weak or inconsistent extrusion, but excessive nozzle temperature and partial clogs can imitate several of those symptoms. Start with evidence, then change one variable: the condition of the filament.
◆1. Confirm moisture first
Listen for popping or hissing at the nozzle and look for a sudden increase in stringing, rough texture, tiny surface voids, or inconsistent extrusion. If the spool printed cleanly before storage and now behaves differently with the same profile, moisture moves higher on the suspect list.
◆2. Use controlled heat
Use a filament dryer or other purpose-built method that can hold a stable, material-appropriate temperature. Follow the filament and spool manufacturer limits. Overheating can soften a plastic spool, deform filament, or create a new feeding problem instead of fixing the old one.
◆3. Match the drying plan to the material
PLA, PETG, TPU, nylon, ABS/ASA, and specialty blends do not all tolerate the same drying conditions. Use the dryer settings by material page for conservative starting guidance rather than applying one temperature to every spool.
◆4. Let moisture escape
A warm sealed box can redistribute moisture instead of removing it. Use equipment designed for active drying or follow its venting instructions. Do not improvise a high-temperature setup that cannot regulate heat reliably.
◆5. Retest the same print
After drying, print the same small stringing or surface sample with the same slicer profile. Cleaner extrusion, less popping, fewer wisps, and a more uniform surface support the moisture diagnosis. If nothing changes, investigate temperature, nozzle condition, or feed-path resistance next.
◆6. Store it dry immediately
Drying is temporary if the spool returns to humid air. Move it to a sealed dry box or properly sealed storage with fresh desiccant once it cools enough for storage. For moisture-sensitive materials, printing from a dry box can prevent a long print from undoing the drying work.
Drying is not the same as storage
Desiccant is excellent for maintaining a dry environment, but a storage container is not automatically an active dryer. If a spool is already wet, dry it first; then use sealed storage to slow moisture uptake. The drying and storage master guide covers that full cycle.
Safety rule: never exceed the temperature limits of the filament, spool, dryer, or other equipment. If the manufacturer gives a specific drying method, use that before a generic recommendation.
