Why Is My Filament Popping While Printing?

Popping, hissing, or tiny steam-like bursts at the nozzle often point toward moisture, but not every noise is wet filament. Use the sequence below to separate material condition from excessive heat, a partial clog, or unstable feed before changing retraction and flow.

What the sound can mean

Moisture inside filament can flash into vapor in the hotend and create popping, hissing, bubbles, rough surfaces, or inconsistent extrusion. The strongest clue is a known-good profile that becomes noisy or stringy after a spool has been open or stored in humid air.

Check for moisture first

Listen during a slow extrusion, inspect the strand for tiny bubbles or a rough texture, and compare with a dry or known-good spool if available. PETG, TPU, nylon, and some specialty materials often reveal moisture sooner than an ordinary PLA print.

Rule out excessive temperature

A nozzle that is much hotter than the material needs can increase oozing, discoloration, smell, and unstable extrusion. Return to the material's normal temperature window before assuming retraction is wrong. Do not compensate for excessive heat with extreme travel or retraction settings.

Rule out a partial clog

A partial clog can make extrusion pulse, click, or change width, especially after a filament swap. If flow is inconsistent without the moisture signs, inspect the nozzle path and run the partial-clog workflow before drying a spool for hours.

Dry, then re-test the same print

If moisture is likely, dry the material using an appropriate temperature for that filament and spool, then run the same small test with the same slicer profile. Improvement after drying is much stronger evidence than changing temperature, speed, flow, and retraction at the same time.

Prevent the problem from returning

Once a spool is dry, store it sealed with effective desiccant or in a dry-box workflow appropriate to the material. Record the material, drying condition, nozzle temperature, and result so a future stringing or popping problem has a known baseline.
