Rough Walls and Z-Banding Fix Guide
Diagnose rough outer walls, repeating bands, inconsistent extrusion, wobble, vibration artifacts, and slicer/profile issues without randomly changing every setting.
Symptoms
- Horizontal bands that repeat through the print
- Rough or uneven outer walls
- Visible vibration/ringing near corners
- Random texture changes on straight walls
- Prints look worse after speed changes
Likely causes
- Loose belts, wheels, rods, or frame movement
- Extrusion inconsistency or partial clog
- Layer height/speed/acceleration mismatch
- Z lead screw contamination or binding
- Filament condition problems
Fast checks before changing settings
- Print a simple single-wall cube before changing many settings
- Check belts/wheels/gantry movement gently
- Inspect filament path and nozzle flow
- Compare against a slower known-good profile
- Use Filament Advisor if surface gets fuzzy or inconsistent
Safe fix path
- Run a small wall test
- Lower speed and acceleration for comparison
- Check mechanical movement and tighten only what is actually loose
- Confirm extrusion flow and nozzle condition
- Save the corrected profile in Profile Vault
