What Is the Best Bed Temperature for PLA?

For most STLBEAST PLA troubleshooting, 50–65°C is a practical bed starting range. The correct value is the one that gives clean first-layer contact without excessive squish, elephant foot, or heat-related softness.

Use bed temperature as one part of the first-layer system

A practical STLBEAST starting range for PLA is about 50–65°C. Use the filament maker's recommendation and the build-plate manufacturer's limits first. Bed temperature cannot compensate for fingerprints, a nozzle that is too high, or a badly chosen plate profile.

Start in the middle of the range

If the filament and plate do not specify something different, begin near the middle of the 50–65°C range. Print a first-layer test, then change bed temperature in small steps instead of jumping between extremes.

If PLA will not stick

Before raising temperature, clean the plate and verify Z offset or first-layer calibration. If those are correct, a modest increase in bed heat can help the first layer stay compliant long enough to bond to the surface.

If corners lift later

Corner lift is not always a first-layer temperature problem. Check drafts, part footprint, plate cleanliness, first-layer cooling, and the PLA corners warping guide. Large flat parts can need more than a hotter bed.

If the bottom edge bulges

Too much first-layer squish or excessive retained heat can contribute to elephant foot. Confirm nozzle height first, then reduce bed heat if the bottom stays overly soft. Do not fix elephant foot by raising the nozzle so far that adhesion becomes weak.

Textured PEI behaves differently

Texture changes the contact geometry. If PLA is not gripping a textured PEI sheet, follow the textured PEI first-layer workflow and verify the slicer's plate selection before assuming the temperature number is wrong.

Change one thing at a time

Keep nozzle temperature, first-layer speed, flow, cooling, and Z offset stable while you test bed temperature. A controlled first-layer square tells you more than changing five profile values and hoping the next print works.

Practical PLA decision rule

Weak first-layer contact: clean and calibrate first, then test slightly more bed heat. Strong contact but soft/bulged bottom: confirm Z offset and consider slightly less bed heat. Corners lift after several layers: treat the job as a warping and environment problem, not just a temperature number.
