Why Does My Print Not Stick to Textured PEI?

Textured PEI failures usually come from one of a few basics: contamination, first-layer height, the wrong plate/profile choice, bed temperature, first-layer speed, or a material-specific adhesion mismatch. Fix those in order before reaching for more adhesive.

Fix textured PEI adhesion in the right order

Textured PEI can hide fingerprints, dust, and residue better than a smooth plate, which also makes contamination easy to miss. Do not compensate for a dirty surface by crushing the first layer harder. Establish a clean plate and correct first-layer geometry first.

1. Clean the actual print area

Handle the plate by the edges and follow the build-plate maker's cleaning instructions. If normal maintenance no longer restores adhesion, use the PEI build plate cleaning guide before changing slicer settings. Oils and residue can survive a quick wipe.

2. Verify first-layer height

A nozzle that is too high leaves separate round lines that barely grip the texture. Too low can smear material, create ridges, or produce elephant foot. Use a first-layer test and adjust Z offset or the printer's first-layer calibration in small steps.

3. Confirm the plate/profile selection

Some slicers change bed temperature or first-layer behavior based on the selected build plate. Make sure the slicer profile matches the textured PEI plate actually installed rather than a smooth, cool, engineering, or third-party plate profile.

4. Set material-appropriate bed heat

PLA and PETG do not need the same bed temperature. Too little heat can release corners; excessive heat can make the first layer overly soft or increase elephant foot. Use the material-specific bed-temperature guides as starting points, then tune for the actual plate and filament.

5. Slow and stabilize the first layer

A very fast first layer gives molten plastic less time to conform to the texture. If adhesion is marginal, use a controlled first-layer speed and avoid aggressive cooling before the part is established. Fix cleanliness and height before treating speed as the primary cause.

6. Respect material-specific PEI behavior

PETG can bond strongly to some PEI surfaces while other combinations need help to stick. Follow the plate manufacturer's material guidance. If PETG sticks too hard, the PETG-to-PEI release guide is the correct path rather than increasing adhesion further.

Quick diagnosis

Lines look round and separate: inspect first-layer height. One corner releases later: check cleanliness, bed heat, drafts, and warping. Whole part slides early: verify plate cleanliness, plate selection, height, and first-layer speed. PETG damages the surface: stop treating it as a weak-adhesion problem and use the material-specific release guidance.
